Ideally, your smile should last your whole life. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, as tooth loss can occur due to decay, dental trauma, and gum disease. If you need a tooth removed, you can turn to Drs. Devon Paris, Awaz Yaseen and Cindy Rask from Gentle Dentistry of Columbus for painless tooth extraction services. Here are some frequently asked questions about extraction procedures from dentists in Columbus, Georgia.
A tooth extraction may be recommended for the following reasons:
If you are experiencing the following symptoms due to severely decayed or damaged teeth, you may need to have your tooth removed:
Tooth extractions can be simple or surgical. Both are done under local anesthetic to keep you from feeling pain. For simple extractions, we will numb your tooth and, using forceps, pull your tooth loose. We will then disinfect the extraction site and cover it with gauze to control bleeding.
Our dentists will perform a surgical extraction for impacted wisdom teeth. We will start by making a small incision in your gum to expose your tooth. If necessary, any bone tissue blocking access to your tooth will be removed so we can extract it. We will disinfect the area and stitch your gum to promote quicker healing. We may combine anesthetic with sedation for surgical extractions to keep you comfortable and relaxed during your procedure.
It is normal to experience swelling, bleeding, or pain at the extraction site after your procedure. The bleeding will eventually stop by itself. You can take OTC pain medication to reduce swelling and pain. Placing ice packs on your cheek can also help. Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water can help prevent infection. A blood clot will form at the extraction site, which should be left alone as it helps with your healing. Rest, eat a soft food diet, and do not smoke or drink alcohol during your recovery. You can brush your teeth gently but avoid the extraction site. You should be back to normal within a week.
Once permanent teeth are removed, they are gone forever. You can, however, replace these teeth with implants to make your smile whole and healthy again.
